LAHORE: Ajoka Theatre captivated audiences at the 10th Faiz Festival with a powerful performance of its celebrated play Dara. Staged at Alhamra Hall, the production revisited the historic clash between Mughal princes Dara Shikoh and Aurangzeb, dramatizing their ideological battle over pluralism and orthodoxy.
Written & Directed by Shahid Nadeem, Dara has long been recognized as one of Ajoka’s most impactful works. The play highlights Dara Shikoh’s vision of religious tolerance and mysticism, set against Aurangzeb’s rigid orthodoxy, offering audiences a reflection on themes that remain deeply relevant today.
The packed hall responded with standing ovations, as theatre lovers, students, and cultural activists praised Ajoka for keeping socially conscious theatre alive. Critics noted that the performance was not only a tribute to Mughal history but also a reminder of the dangers of extremism and the importance of dialogue in contemporary society.
The Faiz Festival, held annually to honor poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz, featured a diverse program of poetry recitals, book launches, music concerts, and theatre. Ajoka’s Dara stood out as one of the festival’s highlights, reinforcing the troupe’s reputation as a pioneer of progressive theatre in Pakistan.
