"Jaloos" was Ajoka's first ever production, staged in a house lawn in May,1984 A chorus of six provide the framework and the backdrop: In quick succession the young group transforme itself into a train, a bus, the oppressed, the oppressor, and a multitude of crowds caught in a variety of poses and actions. Their movements precise and their snatches of speech perfectly synchronized. The stage is as bare of props as the actors are of make-up or costumes. But despite all their engaging informality, the proceeding generates an electric ambiance which flows between the actors and the audience.
One young actor is murdered, only to be resurrected and killed again and again, He stands for the common man who is constantly being crushed under society's heel. And every time others express their shock and horror at the crime, a cop comes on stage and announces, "No murder has taken place.
Everything is all right." A maulana enters now and then to reassure the public that all is well, and whatever is happening to them is part of God's design. In between these individual performances, the chorus enters, leaves, cavorts, transforms itself like patterns in a kaleidoscope. Played with limitless energy and considerable sensitivity.
